Bream fish caught at Metung, Steve Cooper

Metung, on the western shore of Bancroft Bay, is a major centre for the cruise-boat industry. Whether you own one or want to hire a live- aboard boat for a few days, Metung is a prime spot. Surprisingly, for a town so reliant on boating, there is only one public ramp. This is located at Shaving Point and is a single lane ramp much in demand during holiday periods.

It is a short run east from Metung to Reeves Channel. Chinamans Creek to the north of Metung, and Box’s Creek, a little further east in Bancroft Bay, are worth a fish. The latter is particularly good if you need to get out of the weather or moor your boat for the night. If you leave Metung and go around Shaving Point heading west, you run into Lake King, a fabulous fishing water that has three of Victoria’s top bream rivers flowing in: the Mitchell, Tambo and Nicholson.
