Buchan Caves

A man named Frank Moon discovered the Fairy Cave in 1907, commenting that ‘Its wonderful beauty defies description and must be seen to be realised.’ The cave is part of the Buchan Caves Reserve, and consists of a series of chambers over 400 metres long with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. A stream that has sunk under the surface of the cave floor actually joins Fairy Cave to another famous cave, Royal Cave, and flows on to Federal Cave and Dukes Cave (both closed) before it trickles into a swimming pool. Royal Cave is known for its beautiful calcite-rimmed pools. While only Royal and Fairy caves have regular tours, there are more than 350 caves in Buchan Caves Reserve.
