When this welcoming cafe opened 18 years ago in an old miner’s cottage, it was the first cafe in town. Today it is so popular it has seats on a pavement verandah and even on the roof – the views over the rooftops of Castlemaine are one of the best kept secrets in town. Their fresh made-to-order eggs are renowned – try the bacon and egg jaffles. They sell muffins by the tonne – brandy-spiced apricot or raspberry, and savoury ones such as prosciutto, cheddar and ricotta. In winter, lunchtime soups might be pea and ham, lamb shank and barley or Moroccan vegetable and chickpea; in summer, perhaps fresh tomato and basil. They are also known for the curries – Indian, Asian, Thai, Malay and more.
