A Chinese settlement was located at Surface Point in the gold-rush days, and there’s still some evidence of it scattered throughout the bush. Try your hand at fossicking along Misery Creek – don’t let the name deter you – or take long walks around the park. Note: when walking, stick to the tracks, as mine shafts are hidden in the surrounding terrain.

This campsite is located in Enfield State Park

The setting for furious excavation work in the Victorian gold-rush days, the Enfield region is now explored by bushwalkers and horseriders – horses must keep to vehicle tracks. Nature lovers will really enjoy the surroundings: dozens of orchid species and many eucalypts have taken root here, and the area resounds with the calls of numerous birds and frogs. Take Misery Creek Rd off the Ballarat–Colac Rd, 25 km south of Ballarat.
