Penny School Gallery/Cafe
Housed in one of only six Victorian heritage-listed buildings in Maldon – itself classified by the National Trust as Australia’s first notable town – this gallery cafe was a former denominational (Penny) school prior to the days of public education. Today it is a commercial fine art gallery, its walls lined with high-quality artworks. Lunch ranges from pasta, frittatas and antipasto platters to classic French terrines such as duck and pistachio. For dinner, perhaps start with a chickpea and prosciutto soup or prawn and water chestnut dumplings before trying a main course of Moroccan-style tagine of lamb with preserved lemon or a red Thai duck curry.
