If you’re part of a large group, or are towing a caravan or camper trailer, head for relatively flat ground at Middle Creek. You can walk right across the park from here. A particularly steep and demanding trail is the Cave Walking Track, which heads north-east to an impressive rock overhang. The campsites are on Jimmy Smith Rd, which is signposted off Ferntree Gully Rd.

This campsite is located in Mount Buangor State Park

About 20 km west of Beaufort, and reached via Ferntree Gully Rd from the Western Hwy, is 2500 ha Mt Buangor State Park. The mountain itself, decorated with snow gums, looms over the surrounding area. A web of walking tracks is strung between the park’s 2 camping areas, and more trails delve into neighbouring Mt Cole State Forest.

There are major projects underway to repair roads, walking tracks and visitor facilities in Buangor State Park, which were damaged by fire in 2010 and torrential rainfall and storms in 2011. Check with Parks Victoria regarding areas not open to visitors.
