You can choose your own bush-camping site beside the Murray among (though never under, because of the possibility of falling branches) the towering red gums here. From Picola, which lies off the Murray Valley Hwy, take Picola North Rd, then Murrays Mill Rd and finally Gulf Rd, from where there’s signposted access.

This campsite is located in Barmah National Park

Some of the river red gums in Barmah National Park took root here half a millennium ago. This extraordinary national park is the world’s largest sanctuary for the river red gum, located beside the Murray River near the town of Barmah. There’s cool swimming in the river. Some visitor sites and tracks within the national park were closed due to flood damage in early 2012 - check with Parks Victoria on the current status.
