At Mooroopna, former city chef Matthew Milsome returned to the countryside and created this slick award-winning restaurant infused with Melbourne sophistication. Housed in a heritage-listed building that was once a bank, Milsome presents casual lunchtime fare such as fish pie, before dimming the lights in the formal dining room for evening service. The cuisine is modern Australian with Asian and European influences – perhaps confit rabbit and mushroom spring rolls or Sichuan smoked duck with local peaches. On Sunday evenings there’s a six-course degustation menu with BYO wine (no corkage). There is also an extensive wine list.
