Established in 1860, Tahbilk Winery (254 O’Neils Rd, Nagambie, (03) 5794 2555) has a small pocket of its original shiraz vines, and the wine made from these grapes is worth its weight in gold. The winery also includes a wetland, wildlife reserve and a three-tiered chateau with white walls and a red roof that is classified by the National Trust. Mitchelton (Mitchellstown Rd, Nagambie, (03) 5736 2221) is the other big name in the area, established in 1969. There is a lookout with views of the Goulburn River, and you can either buy a picnic hamper or pack your own for a lunch outing by the river. At both wineries, shiraz and marsanne are the highlights.
