North Eastern Hotel
This 1905 Federation brick hotel has had a major overhaul to create an open-plan dining room with leather couches and open fires for winter warmth, and relaxing courtyard dining in summer. The menu of regional contemporary dishes gives a nod to Mediterranean and Asian flavours, and the lunchtime menu is a variation on the dinner menu with smaller serves. In season, look for fresh asparagus, antipasto plates and soft-shell crab and calamari salad. Porterhouse steak is always a good option, as is slow-cooked pork spare ribs served with Chinese vegetables and coconut rice.
