King Valley

Italian heritage is evident in many of King Valley’s vineyards. Varieties such as sangiovese, nebbiolo and barbera rub shoulders with cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and merlot. Brown Brothers (239 Milawa–Bobinawarrah Rd, Milawa, (03) 5720 5500) is the biggest name with the most established cellar door – a barnlike building featuring some enormous oak barrels of ageing wine. It also incorporates the Epicurean Centre restaurant, great for long, lazy lunches. To the west, Sam Miranda King Valley (1019 Snow Rd, Oxley, (03) 5727 3888 or 1800 994 750) is known for its chardonnay. Its cellar door also represents Symphonia Wines, which produces some of the region’s more interesting varieties such as saperavi and tannat. Heading south are Dal Zotto (Main Rd, Whitfield, (03) 5729 8321) and Pizzini (175 King Valley Rd, Whitfield, (03) 5729 8278). Pizzini’s sangiovese is one of Australia’s best.
