This central 1862-built country hotel has been recently renovated, with big glass doors opening onto a rear courtyard that is shaded in summer for dining by a century-old pin-oak. There’s a playground for children to keep them amused while adults can enjoy a few quiet drinks and dine in peace. Regulars drive from Melbourne and nearby towns just to enjoy the meals cooked on special heated granite stones. In DIY barbecue style, patrons cook their own choice of chicken, pork or steak over these intensely hot stones that are brought out to individual tables – accompanied by salads. The hotel also does a roaring trade with thin, crisp-crust gourmet pizza from their wood-fired oven.
