Winemaking in Rutherglen has been more or less continuous since 1839, and many of the wineries go back well beyond 100 years. Campbells (4603 Murray Valley Hwy, Rutherglen, (02) 6032 9458), Jones (61 Jones Rd, Rutherglen, (02) 6032 8496), St Leonards (201 St Leonards Rd, Wahgunyah, (02) 6035 2222) and Warrabilla (Murray Valley Hwy, Rutherglen, (02) 6035 7242) produce the bold reds – shiraz and durif – that the region is renowned for. But Rutherglen is even better known for its world-class fortified wines, mostly muscat and tokay. In this category, Chambers Rosewood (Barkly St, Rutherglen, (02) 6032 8641) and Morris (Mia Mia Rd, Rutherglen, (02) 6026 7303) lead the way. The countryside of grassy paddocks and big old gum trees is dotted with many beautiful historic buildings, and some of the wineries are located on the banks of the Murray River. A popular Winery Walkabout is held every June.
