St Kilda Marina gives boat anglers easy access to excellent snapper and whiting grounds. Inshore there is plenty of seagrass and sand areas for whiting while the deeper waters offer reef areas for snapper. The St Kilda Pier has produced snapper to 9 kg at night. Also expect King George whiting, garfish, salmon and leatherjackets.
The Sandringham to Mordialloc area is excellent for King George whiting. The fish are found in the shallower areas where there is a mix of snags and weed. Some better- known marks include the horse paddocks at Mordialloc and the clock tower at Sandringham. Black Rock is a hotspot for pinkies on soft plastics and these are found in water a little deeper than for whiting (3–5 m on average) while big snapper are found in the deeper water (11–21 m). Flathead abound in most areas but for larger flathead, aim for marks closer in, particularly in the early morning.
