Not to be confused with the much-loved Journal Cafe downstairs, Journal Canteen is a bright and cheery lunch-only joint with a daily changing menu of simple, rustic and unfailingly delicious Sicilian-inspired food. With banks of windows overlooking Flinders Lane, a series of plywood and metal communal tables and an open kitchen that is very much part of the room, there is a lovely hominess to the place, as if you are eating in someone’s house. The food reflects this comfort zone, like the rustic antipasto that includes house-marinated olives and squares of pan-fried ricotta, the simple pasta dishes or Italian classics like veal saltimbocca. A tiny, all-Italian wine list keeps things simple and authentic.
