Bell's Hotel and Brewery
Brewery
Melbourne’s longest-running brewpub has been producing house beers since the late 1980s; admittedly playing second fiddle to the wide range of more commercial beers on tap at this South Melbourne institution. Bill Bell sold the pub and retired in 2008, leaving a lifetime association with the family-owned hotel behind (he was born in an upstairs room), including 50-odd years of pouring beers there. The brewing project resulted from an amber nectar-charged moment for Bell. I went to Carlton Brewery in Bouverie Street and had a few beers too many in their taproom,’ he recalls. ‘Then I announced: “Any mug can make beer” – and it’s the most expensive statement I’ve ever made.
