French Island

Sparsely populated French Island, with its remote beaches and unspoilt landscape, sits in Western Port, north of Phillip Island. Two-thirds of the island is national park, home to Victoria’s most significant koala population, the rare long-nosed potoroo, and over 230 bird species. The surrounding waters are a sanctuary for waders such as herons, ibis and egrets, and the migratory eastern curlew can be seen pecking for treasures in the mudflats. Visitors can explore on foot, by bike (mountain bikes recommended) or join a tour. The island can be reached by ferry from Stony Point.
