Sorrento, Portsea and Rye
The beauty of the towns of Sorrento, Portsea and Rye on the narrow tip of the Mornington Peninsula is that you can take your pick between their ‘front’ and ‘back’ beaches. The front beaches face calm Port Phillip; the water splashes gently on the shore and remains shallow for quite a distance, making it perfect for children. Teenagers jump off the ends of jetties, while swimmers can treat the water like a giant natural lap pool, albeit with a fringe of bobbing yachts. The back beaches, just a few kilometres away, face rugged Bass Strait and are perfect for those looking for waves. Sorrento’s back beach has suitable breaks for learners and, on the rock platforms of this coast, anglers can try their hand at fishing for snook, sweep and Australian salmon.
