Bridgewater Bay is the coastal jewel that awaits when you travel west beyond Port Fairy. The bay is about a 20‑minute drive from Portland and on a sunny day, as you come over the scrubby hill and down towards the small township, the beach is a perfect vista of white sand and aquamarine sea with the impressive grass-covered cape in the background. The section of the beach that is best for swimming (and is patrolled in summer) is beneath the cape. Bands of medium-sized waves usually roll in, making this a great spot for beginner surfers. For a good beach walk, when the tide is low, go to the end of the beach and around to Shelly Beach.
