Port Fairy beach
Port Fairy has the perfect holiday-town beach. In summer it is bustling with paddling toddlers and beach tents, with body surfers and boogie boarders coming in on the waves. The waves on this long strip are just a gentle lap up the rocky Moyne River end, but become increasingly thundering as the beach curves away to Killarney. In the middle, where the patrols are, they’re a happy medium. When the crowds have cleared out in winter, you’ll only see the odd surfer, angler or rugged-up walker. Beyond the Moyne River and Griffiths Island is The Passage, where the local surfing crews head.
