Werribee Open Range Zoo Slumber Safari
Hotel/motel/B&B
Running between September and May, an overnight stay at Werribee Zoo is the closest thing to an African safari without the flying miles. Guests are treated to four up-close animal encounters, including a tour through the open savannah where giraffes, rhinoceros and zebras can be found, and a night-time adventure. The other up-close encounters may be handfeeding giraffes or watching the lionkeepers train their ‘pupils’. The accommodation area is cleverly situated on a hill over the savannah, to really make you feel as if you are part of the environment. The eight tents include a queen-size bed with a mosquito net, and some with two single beds for families. Blankets and hot water bottles are available during the cooler months. A barbecue dinner and cooked breakfast are served in the communal mess tent, and guests are invited to enjoy marshmallows around the campfire, with a free lesson in African drumming.
