Cape Le Grand National Park
Cape Le Grand National Park is 50 kilometres east of Esperance. You can spend days paddling here, just enjoying the scenery and unspoilt coast. Hellfire Bay and Thistle Cove are a photographer’s dream, both being surrounded by tall hills and offering a kilometre-long beach; the sand is a dazzling white and squeaks underfoot. Visibility in the bays is so good that you can still see the sandy bottom in 20 metres of water, and snorkelling here is incredible – look out for inquisitive blue gropers. There are many excellent options for a one-day-return paddle, including the 20-kilometre-return trip between Lucky Bay and Hellfire Bay, but a shorter option is the 7-kilometre-return between Lucky Bay and Mississippi Point. You can land at the beach under Mississippi Hill to find shelter from the swell. If staying overnight here, there are campsites within the national park at Le Grand Beach and Lucky Bay.
