Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre
This not-for-profit venture at Ongerup (around 140 kilometres north of Albany) is housed in a $2 million, purpose-built centre. Staffed by volunteers and including a cafe and gallery that has nature-based photography and art, it aims to provide education about and help conserve endangered mallee fowl – the plump grounddwelling birds that build massive mounds in which they lay eggs. There is an aviary with mallee fowl, and an interpretation centre describing all facets of their lifecycle.
