The wheat-belt town of Beacon is 315 km north-east of Perth, and enormously popular with birdwatchers. The caravan park on Lucas St provides travellers and twitchers alike with a good range of facilities in shady surroundings. Most birders head to the country around Karoon Hill, 50 km further along the track, which is a haven for a variety of birdlife. The cockatoos are especially colourful, including the brilliantly plumed red-tailed black and Major Mitchell varieties. This is the most north-easterly town in the wheat belt, and the ripening grain attracts birds from the goldfields region and other outlying areas beyond the emu-proof fence.
