Hyden

Wave Rock, Ken Stepnell

Population 281

The small wheat-belt town of Hyden is synonymous with its famous nearby attraction, Wave Rock, originally known as Hyde's Rock in honour of a sandalwood cutter who lived in the area. A typing error by the Lands Department made it Hyden Rock, and the emerging town soon became known as Hyden. The area around the town boasts beautiful wildflowers in spring, including a wide variety of native orchids.

Wave Rock Resembling a breaking wave, this 100 m long and 15 m high granite cliff owes its shape to wind action over the past 2.7 billion years. Vertical bands of colour are caused by streaks of algae and chemical staining from run-off waters (4 km E). At Wave Rock Visitor Centre see the largest lace collection in the Southern Hemisphere with fine examples of antique lace, including lace worn by Queen Victoria. There are local wildflower species on display, an Australiana collection at the Pioneer Town, fauna in a natural bush environment and a walking trail.
