Merredin
Town
Population 2556
Merredin started as a shanty town where miners stopped on their way to the goldfields. In 1893 the railway reached the town and a water catchment was established on Merredin Peak, guaranteeing the town's importance to the surrounding region. An incredible 40 per cent of the state's wheat is grown within a 100-kilometre radius of the town.
