Mullewa

Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church This small church is widely considered to be the crowning achievement of noted priest-architect Monsignor John C. Hawes. Built of local stone, this gem of Romanesque design took 7 years to build with Hawes as architect, stonemason, carpenter, modeller and moulder. The adjoining Priest House is now a museum in honour of Hawes, housing his personal belongings, books, furniture and drawings (cnr Doney and Bowes sts). Both of these buildings are part of the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Trail, which also features the Pioneer Cemetery (Mullewa–Carnarvon Rd; 1 km N) and a site at the old showground just outside town, where a rock carved by Monsignor Hawes was once a simple altar where he held mass for the local Aboriginal people (Mt Magnet Rd; 1.5 km E). Butterabby Gravesite This gravesite is a grim reminder of the harsh pioneering days. A stone monument recalls the spearing to death in 1864 of a convict labourer and the hanging in 1865 of 5 Aboriginal people accused of the crime. Mullewa–Mingenew Rd; 18 km S.Tenindewa Pioneer Well: example of the art of stone pitching that was common at the time of construction, reputedly built by Chinese labourers en route to the Murchison goldfields. Coalseam Conservation Park: remnants of the state's first coal shafts, now a picnic ground; 45 km SW.
