Lake Monger, a large urban wetland 5 kilometres north of Perth’s CBD in the suburb of Wembley, is the best place in Perth to see Western Australia’s famous black swans. Ever since 1697, when Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh named the Swan River after the numerous black swans he found on its waters, the majestic waterbirds have been inextricably linked with Western Australia. The first settlement was named the Swan River Colony, and the black swan became the official state bird emblem of Western Australia in 1973.
