Iron-ore mine, Fred Kamphues / Auscape International

Population 4247

Located in the heart of the Pilbara, Newman was built in the late 1960s by the Mount Newman Mining Company to house the workforce required at nearby Mount Whaleback, the largest open-cut iron-ore mine in the world. At the same time a 426km railway was constructed between Newman and Port Hedland to transport the ore for export to Japan.
