Colonial Brewing Company
Colonial Brewing won Champion Small Brewery at the 2006 Australian International Beer Awards, less than 18 months after firing up from the familyfriendly bar/restaurant complex, 10 kilometres outside the Margaret River township. Foundation brewer Dean McLeod has moved on to the White Rabbit Brewery in Victoria and an ambitious $10 million public float fell flat, leaving the company in the hands of major shareholder Chris Morris (founder of Computershare). There are currently plans to seriously upgrade from the 6-hectolitre microbrewery and concentrate on keg beer distribution (the bottling line has been decommissioned, though Colonial beers are available for takeaway in 2-litre re-useable ‘growlers’). The quirky beer names like Dr Quick Strong Ale and Spruikers Challenge have been dropped for more standard names, such as Colonial Pale Ale and Colonial Kolsch, while the complexity and alcohol levels have been reeled in somewhat. A second outlet – the Royal Bar and Brasserie in East Perth – has also been acquired in recent times.
